What does Oracy look like at Cherry Orchard?

Children are taught oracy skills throughout all lessons. We encourage children to think and rehearse their ideas first before sharing them with a partner or small group. During oracy activities, children are encouraged to listen carefully to other children’s ideas, so they can summarise them afterwards.

The symbols below are displayed in all our classrooms.

Instigate, Build, Challenge

Children are taught key sentence stems to help them contribute to group and class discussions.

Groupings

 

 

 

PAIR - Children spend time thinking through their ideas or whispering their ideas to themselves.

NEST - Children turn to look at their partner and take it in turns to discuss the specific topic.

TRIO - Children stand in three. Two children take it in turns to discuss something. The third child stays silent and listens. The third child summarises what they heard.
