PSHE

VISION

To enable children to be active, positive and mindful citizens of the future.

INTENT

Our intention is that when children leave Cherry Orchard they are able to feel loved so they can learn and can grow and therefore live their lives to the full; flourishing today and in the future as strong, moral citizens. As a school we ensure that our pupils achieve their full potential, developing skills to become independent, life-long learners, who leave us as responsible citizens that are respectful and tolerant.

We encourage our children to have high aspirations and to believe in themselves. This is emphasised through our growth mindset approach, teaching children that if they continually work to improve their skills it will lead to greater personal growth and ultimately success.

Our PSHE curriculum enables our children to think about themselves and their wider community but also to make links to our sustainable goals in order to be active, global citizens. In our ever-changing world, we know there will be many challenges ahead and these are discussed throughout our curriculum, but particularly emphasised through our PSHE lessons.

Throughout our PSHE lessons, we take a mindful approach in order to promote good mental wellbeing. Through the spiritual, moral, cultural (SMSC) mental and physical development of pupils, we will prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences in later life. Children’s self-esteem is built through building a positive self-image, a sense of identity and building healthy relationship with self – this then allows healthy relationships with others. Our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

IMPLEMENTATION

PSHE and RSE at Cherry Orchard are taught through the whole school scheme: ‘Jigsaw’. This scheme allows all year groups to work on the same theme at the same time, with each theme pitched age appropriately. These themes are as follows:

Being Me

Celebrating Differences

Dreams and Goals

Healthy Me

Relationships

Changing Me

Throughout these themes, children are taught mindfulness techniques, how to manage and regulate their thoughts and feelings, and their awareness of others opinions and beliefs. We believe that mindful children can then more readily choose their responses to situations, saving behaviour issues from arising and help to improve their concentration whilst lessening stress and anxiety.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is also taught through our Jigsaw scheme. This allows us to teach children to have a positive self-image, enabling children to build a healthy relationship with themselves. This allows children to then build healthy relationships with others.

IMPACT

By the time our children leave Cherry Orchard, they will be equipped mentally and physically for their futures and fully prepared for their future. Children will be able to act with thought and mindfully to be active citizens of their world. Our children will be able to interact with others and build healthy and appropriate relationships. They will understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level, having respect for themselves and others.
